Together Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

Consider this a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of the horror genre: Settle in with your significant other and watch Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its online premiere on Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like standard physical horror, but within Together lies a profound examination about the ways we decide to love each other.

A Debut Feature Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for a decade. Married in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a special spark to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The story begins when Millie and Tim relocate from the urban environment to the country for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, sure, but that’s largely where the conventions conclude. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the two discover an underground cave. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence begins influencing the couple. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a methodically building horror experience, interspersing bits of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes during something grotesque). The director skillfully blends these components neatly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and far away from his network of friends. He fears the notion of completely losing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in Together refrains from painting one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie face the kind of problems that come with any relationship after ten years. At their core, they have affection for one another. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these concerns of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to another person, the symbolism avoids being hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal work together in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. It has been said that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could act as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the ending plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply turn to your partner and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can embark on today.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
